‘Dickinson’ Star Hailee Steinfeld Talks Being A Teen In 1800s | [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

♪ music ♪ – I have one purpose. – Wild nights. – And that is to become a great writer. – Working on this project,
we were taking facts about this person that is so wildly loved. Taking those facts that we do know, right? The little that we know,
and expanding on it. So there were times when I
felt like this was a show, this was about what myself
and the rest of my cast and Alena Smith, that it’s
about what we are creating and it’s sort of how we
are inspired by Emily and her poetry. But when it came to the poetry
specifically, I was like, how do you read a poem? How do I do this justice? You know what I mean? She writes and talks about
so many things that a lot of people, I think, are
either afraid to talk about or feel like they shouldn’t. She just puts it all out there,
and that’s the first step to sort of tackling that
sort of thing is noticing it, talking about it, and finding
ways that you can help yourself, and one thing about her is
she knew that the only thing that was gonna keep her
alive was her writing and she did just that and
I love that about her. What’s so incredible about
this show is that it touches on so many parallels of
issues and events that we deal with today that,
we’re watching a show that takes place in the 1850s
where it’s so relevant. But we’ve created a space,
I mean, we’re making a show about a woman fighting to
be heard, and so it was a wonderful environment
I think that we created on this show for everyone. I knew I wanted to be
a part of this project. I’m just so proud of the show
and I hope people love it.
