Making a Clay Luminary : Centering Clay on a Spin Wheel
So the first step is going to be centering.
You want to take your round lump of clay, throw it down hard on the center of the wheel
head. You want to put as much of your body weight into your left arm as possible. You
can do that by leaning on the splash pan, putting your elbow into your hip, whatever
you need to do in order to keep this hand from moving. You want to get a sponge and
get it wet enough to where if you squeeze it, water will come out, but that it’s not
dripping on its own. And first you want to get the lump of clay nice and moist so that
it’s not going to stick to your hands. You’re going to take your right hand and push towards
your left hand and up. Squeeze the sponge if you start to feel any sticking with that
clay. You’re not using the sponge; you’re just holding it and squeezing it if you need
water. And then, you’re going to push down from the top with your right hand, using your
left hand to stabilize that clay and keep it from pushing too far out. And once you’ve
got a pad of clay that doesn’t look like it’s moving very much, or feel like it’s moving
very much, it’s on center.
