What Is “Looking for Alaska” Star Charlie Plummer’s Favorite NYC Movie?

– Hi, I’m Charlie Plummer and I play Miles Halter on the Hulu original series
“Looking for Alaska”. And this is my Take 5. The last TV show I binged… I was just in bed sick
all last week with the flu and I just watched all of “Barry.” – I mean, look what we inspired! – [Announcer] Nick, your
vomit scene is up next. – I had such a wonderful
time watching it. (laughs) Especially in the acting class scenes, ’cause I grew up in the theater world, so those really hit home for me. My dad is a theater director, so he would always make me
stand with a shoe on my head and walk around the room and just focus on keeping
it on top of my head. – I mean, do you think
Meryl Streep and Kaley Cuoco became stars just
because they’re the best? – Yes. – No.
– No. – It’s because they wanted it the most. – Most. – One of my favorite
movies set in New York is probably ‘When Harry Met Sally.’ – I am so relieved that you think so too. – I just have so many memories of walking through Central Park. I just think that movie really captures it so beautifully, especially
Central Park in the fall. And I’m also just a sucker
for those type of movies. – [Jess] I have good taste. – I’m probably more like the
Meg Ryan character, honestly. I’m very picky. – I don’t want the ice cream on top, I want it on the side,
and I’d like strawberry instead of vanilla if you have it. If not, then no ice
cream, just whipped cream but only if it’s real. If it’s out of a can, then nothing. – I’m actually vegan, but
there’s a lot of things I still don’t like, like I don’t like avocado,
which is really weird, and I don’t like beans. But yeah, so I very much
relate to Sally. (laughs) – I just want it the way I want it. – I know, high maintenance. – One of the movies that’s
had a huge impact on me, ‘Running on Empty.’ It’s a Sidney Lumet movie. I just watched it at a time in my life where I very much felt like I was really connecting with
one of the characters. – I don’t know what I’m doing. – But there’s so many. I mean, when I was little, my favorite movie was ‘Moulin Rouge,’ and I would play Ewan McGregor’s character and my grandma would play
Nicole Kidman’s character. (Charlie laughs) – I indulge his fantasy
because he’s talented. – And ‘Star Wars’ of course, ’cause my parents had
Princess Leia and Han Solo on their wedding cake, so it’s
like a religion practically in my family. (laughs) – The Force is strong in my family. (somber music) – ‘The Lord of the Rings’ books are probably my favorite books that have been turned into films. – It is a gift. – The reason why my hair
is even still pretty long is because my love for
the character of Legolas was so strong when I was a little kid, and I used to wanna grow
my hair down to here just so I could be like him. – [Gollum] So beautiful. – I very much see myself as Legolas and my little brother’s very
much the Gimli in the family. (Charlie laughs) And that’s very much our relationship. – What’s happening out there? – Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to find you a box? (Gimli laughs) – My favorite thing about
“Looking for Alaska,” probably the characters. I think it’s rare when you
find stories about young people that depict them in honest ways. Felt like he was staring into my soul. When I first read the book, they were about to start production on a movie version of it. I got kind of far down the line, and then eventually they were like, “You’re just too young right now.” And I was so sad about it. Seemed like everything was great. And then it just kind of fell through at the last second, and then finally it just kinda came back around. It all found a way of working out. – I can’t believe it either. – The fact that we now get
to make it as a mini-series is a huge boost and I’m very
excited for people to see it. (Charlie laughs) Everything that’s happened
has led me to this moment. That was my Take 5. I hope you watch “Looking for Alaska,” now streaming on Hulu. I’m with you all until the end. (upbeat music)
